During the Second World War,
Canada produced over 850,000 military vehicles for the Allied war effort.
The design and mass production was initially coordinated by the Canadian
Army Engineering Design Branch following British War Office
specifications. However, major car manufacturers like Ford, General
Motors and Chrysler ceased commercial production and retooled their plants
solely for military use. Coordinated designs utilized as many
interchangeable parts as possible. A Three-Ton truck chassis could carry a
dozen bodies including Stores, Wrecker, Petrol Tanker, or Ambulance, made
by different body builders.
