Arthur Lismer's A September
Gale, Georgian Bay dates from a trip that he and Frederick Varley
made in 1920, the year the Group was formed. The two painters sketched
as a storm swept over the water. Lismer moved in to capture the
sculptural qualities of the rocks, clouds, and waves, and especially of
the single tree blown by the wind. The lone tree recalls Tom Thompsons
famous paintings The Jack Pine and The West Wind.
