Montreal painter Edwin Holgate
was one of the last artists to join the Group of Seven. The Lumberjack
is an example of Holgate's figurative work, which also included nudes.
Though the Group was best known for its landscapes, Varley was also to
turn increasingly to portraits and figures. Holgate's lumberjack stands
before a landscape of logs zigzagged in a decorative pattern. Logdrives
were among the favourite subjects of the Group's members.
