Lawren Harris went farther than
his fellow members of the Group in simplifying the forms of nature
into sculptural shapes and organizing an entire scene into a single,
unified conception. From the North Shore, Lake Superior came as
a result of an important trip that Harris made to the lakehead in 1919.
The clouds float like white orchids in a brilliant sky. One can almost
read the painting as a religious work, hinting at the abstract paintings
that Harris would later paint.
