Russian children dream about Ded
Moroz, which translates into Grandfather Frost. Unlike many Christmas
personages who are characterizations of St. Nicholas, the Russian
«Santa» comes from a pagan and secular legend. His red costume
is beautifully decorated with stars. He travels in a tradional Russian
sleigh called a «troika» which is horse-drawn rather than
reindeerdriven. He is known to appear on New Year's Day, as well as
January 7, the date of Orthodox Christmas.
