Landscape was not the
passion for Frederick Varley that it was for other members of the
Group. Though Open Window looks out over a landscape, the window
itself suggests the human presence that was important to Varley. Rather
than capturing the living force of the natural world, Varley sought
to reach the mystic power that moved behind it. Perhaps it was his
early experience as a war artist during the First World War that made
him contemplative.
