Lionel LeMoine Fitzgerald was
the last member to join the Group of Seven, in 1932, one year before they
merged into the Canadian Group of Painters. Unlike the other artists,
Fitzgerald was a westerner. He rarely left his home in Winnipeg. His
reflective habits and intense dedication to his work led him to an
almost reclusive life, in which he explored, through art, the inside
life of the simple objects around him. Pembina Valley dates from
1923, in Fitzgerald's pre-Group of Seven days.
