The River Valley Scenic Drive
runs along two rivers, the Madawaska and the breathtaking St. John,
encountering many different types of scenery. From the Quebec border to
Edmundston, the road follows the west bank of Madawaska through a heavily
wooded area. Past Edmundston, the Trans Canada Highway continues along the
east bank of the St. John to high ground which overlooks a broad valley.
In the hey-day of New France, the route was the first line of
communication between Quebec and the Bay of Fundy. Acadian settlements
developed along the river's lower reaches, while loyalist settlements
sprung up from Saint John northward to Grand Falls.
